thesis
A good choir singing pure intervals goes flat, exactly 21.5 cents per turn of an ordinary progression, forever, because the syntonic comma 81/80 does not close. So we broke every note on purpose. A piano is an instrument that has agreed to be a little bit wrong everywhere in exchange for being able to travel. Local perfection or global consistency, never both.

what it does not claim
Aryabhata computes 62832/20000 and calls the result approached, not equal. Near to pi, not this is pi. The uncertainty is built into the claim rather than bolted on at the end. That is the standard for every number on this site.
